The Pig Book

 Many, many years ago, a Pig Book appeared into the Kauffman Family, probably along the early days when your grandfather (or great grandfather) was growing up.  



It was a guest book, signed by many visitors to their household.  And it told many stories about pigs.

                                                        



Each guest had to draw a pig!   But here is the catch.   They were blindfolded.   The following are the original images in the book.  You are invited to create your own versions of the pig.

    This is a perfect uplifting activity for 2021 even though mine is deemed the ugliest pig by my brother! We should do it again in June.

    In my earlier blog I spoke of the land of Isaac Kauffman, granted under a warrant shown on the map. This farm exists today and is owned by Jere Dickerson. I met Jerry as part of my quest as I visited Lancaster in 2012. The story was quite fascinating. I had gone to Ephrata, some 30 miles north of Lancaster to visit the historical society and subsequently the home of Ludwig Mohler. If you recall the story of Elizabeth Mohlerin eloping with John Coover back in early 1800s, something unheard of for Mennonites, this is her home. Having successfully located this farm, I set off shortly after noon for a brief trip down to a park which is described in that story. Percival Coover Kauffman Family

Percival Coover Kauffman Percy Kauffman Percival Coover Kauffman was the son of Levi and Ann Elizabeth Coover Kauffman, born August 13, 1857 in Mechanicsburg, PA.  He was the oldest of three children.  His brother, Walter Lee Kauffman was born in 1860.   His sister Edith Belle Kauffman was born in 1863.   They lived in Mechanicsburg, PA on 70 West Main Street.   They were right next door to the Coover parents of Ann Elizabeth, on the left side at 74 West Main Street.  There was a door between the two homes. Levi Kauffman Home Ann Elizabeth's father was John Coover, a prominent member of the community who owned substantial land around the town.  Coover had five daughters.  Ann was in the middle.   Levi owned a drug store and hardware store and later started a local bank.  His father, Andrew Kauffman also lived in town, having grown up as a Mennonite on a farm outside of Lancaster.
